Commercially Cerium Chloride or Cerous Chloride is offered as CeCl3.7H2O as white to slightly yellow crystals or lumps. It is a white crystalline solid, hygroscopic in nature. It is a stable compound, sensitive to moisture and incompatible with strong acids and oxidizing agents. It is also used itself as a Lewis acid, for example as a catalyst in Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions.
